i'm told even nancy pelosi's own staff doesn't know. the people i'm talking to, who i suspect do know, won't give me a hint. nancy pelosi has been the house democratic leader for ten years. four of which she was the speaker of the house. and by all accounts she leads her caucus with an iron fist. now she left a lot of her democratic colleagues pretty shocked two years ago when she decided to stay on as minority leader when she lost the gavel. now she really seems to be enjoying this intrigue about her future. listen to what she said yesterday. >> let's see, what time is it now? it's 2:00. on tuesday. i'll see you right here, 10:00 tomorrow morning. while i love you all very dearly i thought maybe i would talk to my own caucus before i shared that information with you. >> now that meeting with democratic colleagues is in fewer than two hours, 9:00 a.m. eastern, then she has a press conference an hour later. i've got to tell you, adding to the intrigue, she will appear with house democratic women. now could that mean she will say, well, s

nancy pelosi is expected to answer whether she's going to stay in her job. in a city where there aren't that many mysteries, this is a mystery. what are you hearing about what she may say? >> reporter: she was asked about this yesterday by reporters, so she's keeping us guessing. she did have a press conference yesterday with some of the new democrats in the house. she'll speak at 10:00 a.m. this morning. i think this sort of i forms speculation among democratic watchers on the hill that she's probably going to stay, but here's what she said yesterday when asked about it. >> see, what time is it now? it is 2:00. on tuesday i will see you right here at 10:00 tomorrow morning. while i love you all very dearly, i thought maybe i would talk to my up caucus before i shared that information with you. >> now she seemed kind of encouraged yesterday at that press conference because of some democratic gains in the house, obviously republicans are still in control there, but it's really also unclear who might succeed pelosi if she decides to forego the minority leaders

nancy pelosi is 72. in the world of politics, age is kind of a skewed concept. average age of members of the house is 56. and of senators it's 62. i mean, paul ryan is thought of as a young gun. he's 42. that's eight years shy of being a card-carrying member of the aarp. ronald reagan was 69 when he first ran for president. many worried he was too old for the job until his famous quip during a debate. >> i will not make age an issue of this campaign. i am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience. >> yes, reagan used age to his advantage. but seriously, how old is too old? remember senator strom thurman who commuted from walter reed to the capitol at the age of 100? his aides had to vote for him. of course, this argument isn't limited to the world of politics. ageism rages in the role world, too. how often have you heard those under 30 grumbling about those old guys sucking up all the jobs? so the talk back question of the day, should politicians have a mandatory retirement age? facebook.com/carolcnn. your responses later

>> i don't, because then they would have put nancy pelosi in charge of the house of representatives. >> david, do you buy that? democrats gain in both the house and the senate. the president won the popular vote, well over 300 electoral votes and by big majorities, they told exit pollsters they agree with the president's position on tax policy. >> well, whether the president has a mandate is a matter of opinion. whether he has power is a matter of fact. this president now has enormous power, because of the expiring of all these various tax measures and because of the advent of the sequester. he's in a situation where he's in a doomsday contest with the republicans, but the doomsday bites republican constituencies harder than those of democrats and of course, the president doesn't have to face re-election so even if doomsday arrives he has less to fear from it than the republicans do. so he's in a very powerful position. and republicans are going to have to be very savvy about how they play this. to go back to your original question, about why -- what was the cause of the defeat, we'r
